MagEfekt History
The company was born out of passion and expertise in the renewable energy sector in 2012 by directors Max Coulthard and David Treanor. The company was born out of a daily 2.5 hour commute of David to
and from General Motors (GM) in Port Melbourne. These car trips provided an opportunity to generate ideas about life after GM, as the company was talking about closing its manufacturing plant down and relocating overseas. The idea of producing an electric vehicle, in particular an electric motor bike is one which had much appeal and he decided to develop further.
A meeting with then Monash University Business and Economics academic Max at led to discussion regarding the next steps and to an agreement of a company being formed with both David and Max bringing their unique industry expertise. Early after the company was formed, it was agreed that perhaps the vision of the company should be broader than just producing electric bicycles. It was agreed the vision should be to provide a broad range of commercial energy solutions.
In order to finance the new business it was agreed that the company needed to focus on something
that could be produced to fill a glaring need in the marketplace. Both directors that felt batteries were
failing to keep up with the rapid changes in technology both in terms of within the transport and
alternative energy storage industries. David’s extensive engineering expertise from the automotive, battery, mining, defense, solar car racing and industrial sectors allowed them to create a unique product with qualities that could assist a broad range of potential client needs.
The initial research and development was undertaken in a garage at Max’s property. Late nights and
weekends were dedicated to get the first prototypes completed. The result was the most dense lithium
iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery that exists in the world as far as we can determine. If you do things
right the compounding benefits are amazing. By redesigning the manufacture of batteries to suit our
customers’ needs we have generated the following benefits:
